A Ship That Helped Change the World
The original Matthew sailed across the Atlantic in 1497, when Italian explorer John Cabot set out from Bristol in search of a new route to Asia. Instead, he reached the coast of Newfoundland, becoming one of the earliest recorded Europeans to land in North America since the Vikings.
